Russians celebrated when their nation was selected to host the 2018 World Cup, but they may not have much to cheer about once the games start. According to the latest bet365 odds on May 30, the hosts were 11th-favorite to win the event at 40/1 behind Brazil at 4/1, Germany 9/2, Spain 6/1, France 13/2, Argentina 9/1, Belgium 11/1, England 16/1, Portugal 25/1, Uruguay 28/1 and Croatia at 33/1.

The oddsmakers don’t see Russia getting too far in group play either. Here’s a look at the group odds:

Group A – Uruguay (4/5)
Group B – Spain (1/2)
Group C – France (2/7)
Group D – Argentina (8/13)
Group E – Brazil (2/7)
Group F – Germany (1/3)
Group G – Belgium (5/6)
Group H – Colombia (11/8)

The Russians could finish second in their group to advance — with their odds of doing so at 1/2. But overall, the hosts are 9/4 to be eliminated in the group stage, 6/4 to exit in the knockout round, 4/1 to be ousted in the quarterfinals, 15/2 to lose in the semis and 14/1 to reach the final.

These are just some of dozens of World Cup betting markets. Gamblers can wager on individual games, teams and player performances as well as total goals and points, team and tournament top goalscorers and player of the tournament etc.

One of the more interesting markets, especially for England supporters, is the to-be-eliminated-by penalty-shootout option. The latest odds have England 5/1 going home via spot kicks and 1/8 no. As for the hosts Russia, they’re 6/1 yes and 1/10 no.
